The role of the photographer on your wedding day

When you think about hiring a wedding photographer, it's easy to think their job is simply turning up with a camera and taking beautiful photos.
But after photographing weddings for more than 15 years, I've realised the role is so much bigger than that. A great wedding photographer isn't just there to document your day—they're there to help it run smoothly, put you at ease, solve little problems before they become big ones, and quietly capture all the moments you'll want to remember forever..
A people person
One of the most important skills a wedding photographer can have has very little to do with the camera. You'll probably spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost any other supplier. They need to know how to make people feel comfortable, help even the most camera-shy guests smile, recognise when an emotional moment is unfolding, and confidently organise everyone for family photos—all while helping the day feel relaxed and enjoyable.
Experience & Knowledge
Weddings are full of so much energy; everyone's nervous, excited, and so happy! There are so many small elements that are finally coming together for this one day. I always help out in any way I can on a wedding shoot; I know how to zip up difficult dresses, how to pin a buttonhole, how to help someone climb through a small window when the wedding rings have been locked inside... I always have a cool head, because I know no matter what goes wrong, there is a solution and you will still make it to the altar. As long as you can stay relaxed and shrug off any little problems that might pop up, you'll have an awesome day!
Experience also means knowing when not to step in—giving you space to enjoy quiet moments together without feeling like you're constantly being photographed.
Organised
Your wedding photographer needs to be organised. When I meet couples to talk about their wedding I make sure I get all of the information I need, and am always happy to help them with their scheduling for the day. We talk through the times for every step of the day, how long we need at each location and set flexible goals for the day. This means that on your wedding day I can help you to keep on top of your schedule, I know what's coming up and when we should think about moving on. This means you can spend less time worrying about the schedule and more time simply enjoying your wedding.
The Eye for Photography
Beautiful photography is about much more than owning a good camera. It's understanding light, noticing moments before they happen, choosing backgrounds carefully, and knowing how to gently guide people while keeping everything feeling natural.
A Lover of Details
It's the little things that come together to tell the story & emotion of your day. You may have spent hours deciding on the handwritten vows, heirlooms, cultural traditions - all the little bits & pieces. Not only that, but it's the in-between moments, the unplanned, the cheeky hugs, a touch of the hand, a little glance. When I'm shooting a wedding I'll be looking for all the beautiful little things that make you, you! That quietly tell the story of your special day.
A Digital Dark Room Whiz
Every wedding photo you receive has been carefully edited by hand. While I always aim to get as much right as possible in camera, editing is an important part of my creative process. It's where I refine colour, light and consistency so your gallery feels cohesive and tells the story of your day beautifully. I also know how exciting it is to relive your wedding day, so I work hard to deliver your gallery as quickly as possible without compromising quality.
